No trip to Austria, Germany or Switzerland during the winter months is complete without a visit to a local Christkindlmarkt (which roughly translates to Christchild market). Even though this charming idea has now spread to most big North american cities, they will never be able to capture all the charm found at these European treasures. Here are 5 reasons missing these beauties is out of reason!

1. Hot Punch

No Christkindle-market is complete without at least 3 Punch-booths selling numerous types of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. And we can't forget the famous Kinderpunch with melted Gumbeers at the bottom. There's just something about standing around shivering with hot cup in hand, surrounded by Christmas lights.

2. Handmade, Christmas-themed decorations

In between Christmastree ornaments and Wood carvings, you can find beautiful book covers and a large variety of culinary goodness, including home-backed goods, you just can't get enough of. Great for souvenirs, as there really is something for everyone.

3. Freshly backed food

Baked potatoes with sour cream, cheese and ham and hand-cut potato chips. Need I say more?

4. Meeting the locals

If you truly want to find out about the local culture, are looking for the best restaurants or cafes nearby or need someone you knows their way around the city, try talking to one of the people running the booth. Having to sit around for most of the day without much diversity, they are most likely happy for the distraction of helping you out. Also, most of the people you will talk to will have at least a basic knowledge of the English )language, some even beyond that.

Christkindl-markets are a go to location, no matter the occasion.
